"Expertly laced with visual humor, Sabali is a gorgeously stylized, wryly comic drama
  —Variety

Presented in partnership with CIMMfest, we are very proud to present The Heart of Madame Sabali, a dramatic film with touches of absurdist comedy, and features surrealist dream sequences as well as colorful art design.

The story is centered on Jeannette, who has a severe heart condition that keeps her trapped in a suburb of Montreal. After receiving her new heart, Jeannette begins to have strange visions of her donor's former life. Soon after, she is befriended by her donor's son, a Malian teenager, who believes she is his mother reincarnated and it turns out that he might just be on to something.

The story itself is based on the scientific concept of cellular memory, the idea that cells contain memories, and that organ recipients sometimes take on the personality traits of their donors. Director Ryan McKenna's stylized and nuanced film is a true delight, as it takes us beyond the world of "déja vu". Marie Brassard (Continental) plays the title role in this strange, beautiful and emotional film that flirts with the fantastic.

Directed by Ryan McKenna, 2015, Quebec/Canada, 79 mins. In French with English subtitles.

Presented with:

Gloomy Sunday

A sad tale of love reunited beyond the grave, in this loving tribute to the Bros. Quay, Starewicz, Jiri Trnka and Barry Purves. Very old school style with intentional flicker, dirt, jerkiness and melancholy.

Directed by Julian Grant, 2016, U.S.A., 3 mins.
