When a teenager (Graham Rogers) loses his once-in-a-lifetime girlfriend (Stefanie Scott) in a tragic accident, he finds that running keeps him connected to her as well as being a way to cope with his grief. Chasing her memory drives him to run faster, and also to win for his inspirational new coach (Billy Crudup). However, his newfound notoriety attracts the attention of an exciting new girl (Liana Liberato) who is determined to find out why he is so driven. He finds himself caught between keeping the past alive while continuing to use the sport of running as a therapeutic form of mourning.
