When Samantha Abbott (Cobie Smulders) begins her final semester teaching science at a Chicago high school, she finds out that she is pregnant. Although her boyfriend, John (Anders Holm), proposes and is thrilled to begin a new life together, Sam struggles with the idea of halting her career to be a full-time mother. Simultaneously, one of Sam's brightest students, Jasmine (Gail Bean), has also become pregnant and Sam makes it her mission to get Jasmine into college, while bonding with her over their impending motherhood. Unbeknownst to Sam, Jasmine is wiser than she thinks and when things do not go exactly according to Sam's plan, she must reexamine what is best for herself and for the people she loves. Unexpected follows these two women as they embark on an unlikely friendship. With Elizabeth McGovern.
