"Veteran helmer Ermanno Olmi has crafted his most complex and sumptuous work to date"
The Chicago premiere of a too-long neglected, beautiful and sumptuous film by Italian film master, Ermanno Olmi. On one level a fairytale set in 1930s China that partially plays out in a brothel, Singing Behind the Screens is the story of a female pirate who becomes the most feared corsair of the Chinese coast until a fateful battle with the new emperor. Complex and bewitching, the film plays out in the viewer's mind as much as on screenthink Peter Greenaway or Jorge Luis Borges.
Directed by Ermanno Olmi, Italy, 2003, 96 mins. In Italian and Mandarin with English subtitles.
The screening will be preceded by a reception and followed by a discussion led by Facets Founder and Director, Milos Stehlik.
