"A landmark in German cinema... [Hanna] Schygulla gives a magnificent performance"
Rainer Werner Fassbinder's breakthrough commercial success features Hanna Schygulla (in a stunning performance) whose marriage to Herman, a soldier who returns to the front after a day and a night together, seems to have ended when Maria is told that Herman was killed. But all changes when Maria's post-war relationship with Bill, an African-American soldier, is upended when Herman suddenly shows up. The Marriage of Maria Braun is, at a second glance, much more transgressive than it seems at first. Fassbinder deftly plumbs the heights of Sirkian melodrama in creating a psychological universe in which characters, their loves, allegiances and betrayals are laid bare, showing the raw viscera of emotions, set against the oppression of history they are unable to change.
Directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, 1979, West Germany, 115 mins. In German with English subtitles.
