Émile Zola's story of lust, betrayal, and mental torture is updated in this 1953 film directed by Marcel Carné. Orphaned Thérèse (Simone Signoret) is married to her elderly, sickly cousin Camille Raquin (Jacque Duby). They live with his dominating mother who ensures Thérèse's life is not her own. Her's is a dull and empty existence, void of romance until she meets truck-driver Laurent (Raf Vallone).

Suspicious of their attraction, Camille takes his wife to Paris. Laurent follows them on the same train and steals a private moment with Thérèse which Camille interrupts. Being discovered, Laurent throws Camille from the moving train. Thérèse and Laurent vow to keep silent, falling deeper into their dark passion. Thérèse reports her husband missing and when his body is discovered police bring her in to identify him. When she lays eyes on his body she does not break, hoping the truth will be buried with her husband. Unfortunately for the lovers, secrets this horrific do not stay hidden for long. A witness to the crime blackmails Thérèse for money. To keep him quiet, the lovers meet his demands, but moments later he is killed while crossing the street in front. Thinking they are in the clear they are unaware that the conman gave a letter to his maid to reveal to the truth to the world if he does not make it home.
