"A propulsive debut"
  —Film Journal International
4 stars "Balancing tragicomic relationship blues with sharp sociopolitical observation, [Maysaloun] Hamoud's slyly subversive drama draws us deep into an often hidden world"
  —The Guardian
"The writer-director has a keen ear for natural dialogue, lent unpredictability and dimension by the lived-in performances of her three dazzling leads"
  —Los Angeles Times
"It's a perfect movie for the moment... it makes its points with an impressive mixture of clarity and nuance"
  —New York Times
"Bold, brassy and beautiful... Hamoud's skill at pop storytelling and mastery of shifting tones are such that In Between unfolds less as a polemic than as a warmly human, often very funny, sporadically tragic story"

In this remarkable debut feature, In Between follows the lives of three strong and independent-minded Israeli-Palestinian women who share an apartment in Tel Aviv. Away from the constraints of their families and enforced tradition, they find themselves trying to lead a life of promise and ambition, despite the restrictions still imposed on them by their country as well as their families.

Laila, a successful lawyer, craves the love of a good man who she thinks she has found in the apparently open-minded and handsome Ziad; Salma works at menial jobs in restaurants and bars hoping her long-held dream of being a DJ becomes a reality. In the meantime she falls for the beautiful trainee doctor Dounia, but is forced to keep their lesbian relationship secret from her family. Laila and Salma's hard partying ways initially come as a shock to the more traditional and reserved Nour who is still studying for a degree and seeks a simple life. She is set for an arranged marriage to fiancé Wissam, seemingly a pillar of the community but who behind closed doors is not the man he appears to be. These three women are rocked by a shocking series of events that will push their beliefs to the limit and change their lives forever while sealing the bond of friendship.

Directed by Maysaloun Hamoud, Israel, 2016, 103 mins. In Arabic and Hebrew with English subtitles.
