How music can change the world

Latcho Drom with Marguerite Horberg

Film still: Latcho Drom Film still: Latcho Drom

Un Certain Regard
Cannes Film Fest
"There is something particularly exciting about a film that doesn't simply offer a burst of cultural difference, but actually creates a picture of the world as you've never seen it before"
  —The Guardian
4 stars "Exuberant and stirring... this movie is so powerful you virtually have to force yourself not to dance during long stretches of it"
  —Chicago Reader

A unique film with music and virtually no dialogue, Latcho Drom follows the journey of the Romani people from north-west India to Spain. As they travel through Egypt, Turkey, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and France, the movie ecstatically portrays the Gypsy experience, in a film which shows how music can preserve and keep alive an ostracized culture, a film "that the Roms could be proud of, that wouldn't make a sideshow of their misery...a song of praise to this people I love." (Tony Gatlif).

Directed by Tony Gatlif, France, 1993, 96 mins.

Marguerite Horberg is founder of the HotHouse, Studio V, and The Salon of Modalisque, an artist, entrepreneur, social justice activist, who has established numerous platforms for international cultural exchange including the debut Chicago World Music Festival, the Chicago Flamenco Festival, Jazz en Clove and Jazz Without Borders.
