Inspired by atrocious true events, Nothing Bad Can Happen follows Tore, a fervent new member of the fundamentalist Christian youth group, Jesus Freaks, an underground Christian punk movement, finds himself living with a dysfunctional family curious to test his seemingly unwavering faith. After a chance encounter helping Benno, a stranded driver and managing to help start his car again in what appears to be a miracle, Tore is invited back to his home and becomes friendly with him and his family. Before long, Tore moves in, sleeping in a tent in the backyard, helps the family with gardening, and gradually blends in. However, Benno cannot resist playing a cruel game, and after punches Tore in the nose during a party for his own amusement, the violence between them escalates into a downward spiral of physical and psychological abuse designed to challenge Tore's beliefs. As his trials become more and more extreme, Tore finds his capacity for love and resilience pushed to its limits, and beyond.

A confident and intense debut film debut from German writer/director Katrin Gebbe. Premiering in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes and strengthened by performances from newcomers Julie Feldmeier and Swantje Kohlhof, Nothing Bad Can Happen explores a harrowing intersection of religion and heresy.

Directed by Katrin Gebbe, Germany, 2013, 110 mins. In German with English subtitles.
