Come and discover a neglected masterpiece of Italian cinema: Elio Petri's The Assassin, an astonishing debut film by one of the undiscovered geniuses of Italian cinema, starring Marcello Mastroianni. Made in the successful—and scandalous—wake Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita, Mastroianni gives an unforgettable performance as Alfredo Martelli, a sleazy but stylish Roman antiques dealer accused of murdering his mistress. A Kafkaesque cat-and-mouse game with the police inspector ensues, a game Martelli clearly relishes despite the stress.

With The Assassin, Elio Petri is not interested in simply creating a conventional whodunit. He acutely shapes a vivid and systematic portrait of the corruption of power, both politically and psychologically, while also managing to make the film a joy to watch, with spine-tingling, funny, and truly beautiful moments.

Directed by Elio Perti, Italy, 1961, 105 mins. In Italian with English subtitles.

The screening will be preceded by a reception and followed by a discussion led by Facets Founder and Director Milos Stehlik.
