"[The film] begins as fly-on-the-wall travelography but soon becomes something much more intimate and eye-opening... [Filmmaker Nanfu] Wang once again proving adept at profiling the lives of extraordinary individuals with universal resonance"
"What starts off as a celebration of reckless freedom turns into a revelation of a broken yet soaring soul"
"The movie blends an intimate perspective with trenchant investigative chops, uncovering a transitory figure whose romantic ideals give way to a harsh reality check"
"Eloquent, disquieting... I Am Another You offers further evidence of this young director's investigative energy and eye for cinematic poetry without the slightest preciousness"
"One of the most striking and enthralling nonfiction films this reviewer has seen in years... it plays like a lyrical road odyssey that's also a detective story"
Documentarian Nanfu Wang follows up her acclaimed film Hooligan Sparrow (Facets Cinémathèque, 2016) with this poignant portrait of a young man lost. While traveling through Florida, she meets Dylan, a handsome, charismatic drifter who has rejected his comfortable, middle-class upbringing to lead a vagabond lifestyle, sleeping on streets, scrounging for food, and living out what he sees as the ultimate freedom from the bonds of materialism. She is initially fascinated by his choice and rejection of society's rules, but as she digs deeper, Dylan's romantic rebellion is gradually revealed to be darker and altogether more complex. Unfolding like a low-key mystery, I Am Another You is an incisive examination of the myth and bitter realities of America's rugged individualism.
