It is a troubling sign of the dangers of extremism that this light, enjoyable musical comedy resulted in death threats for its director. Like so many American rock and roll films, from the '50s to Footloose, this film pits young people and their music against repressive authorities. In this case, the sound that stirs the controversy is Rai music, an Eastern form that is also influenced by rock, rap and other Western music. Popular Algerian Rai singers Khaled and Cheb Mami play rising stars whose radical music gets them in trouble with the mayor and the corrupt imam of the local mosque. The film's satirical swipes at fundamentalism were obviously not taken lightly. "...opens the lid on an element of French society that many of us are unfamiliar with" (James Berardinelli, Reel Views). In French with English subtitles.
