Sir Laurence Olivier stars with his wife Joan Plowright in this award-winning romantic comedy by James Bridie. In a Soho restaurant, diners find their evening disturbed by the extraordinary Lady Pitts (Plowright). She talks aloud and sings even louder, while knocking back double brandies and handing out invitations to tea at the home of her husband Sir Joseph (Olivier). The impact of her appearance on their evening--and in particular on Ernst (Clive Arrindell), an impressionable young Polish emigre--is the subject of this witty and surprising tale of romantic idealism and faltering desire.
