Jules Dassin adapts Marguerite Duras' novella about a married couple (Peter Finch and Melina Mercouri) and a female friend (Romy Schneider) traveling in Spain. After a run-in with a fugitive in a small village, the destination of their trip seems to change from tourist hot spots to human tragedies, with alcoholism and infidelity waiting in the wings.
