CAN MR. SMITH GET TO WASHINGTON ANYMORE?
Audience award AFI/Discovery Channel Silverdocs Fest
"Funny, engrossing...Deeply absorbing and moving with caffeinated speed" -Washington Post
"Very enjoyable...just as exciting as watching a solid Hollywood David vs. Goliath drama" -Film Threat
"Heartening...The movie, like Smith, is breezy, fun and keeps comin' at ya. Politics needs more of this and less of what went on in Ohio." -Chicago Tribune
Recommended! "[Director] Popper sticks close to the fierce campaigner and his young, mostly inexperienced staffers, capturing all the energy, idealism, dour humor, and unreasoning hope of a Cinderella candidacy." -Chicago Reader
Director Frank Popper's eye-opening look at how we elect our political leaders
focuses on the upstart U.S. Representative campaign of energetic newcomer Jeff Smith, who
takes on the Missouri political establishment when he runs against State Representative
Russ Carnahan, a scion of the state's most powerful political dynasty. Smith starts with
no political base and no name recognition, but despite resistance from the political
establishment, voters, the media and even his own family, he mobilizes a youth-oriented
grassroots insurgency that ultimately poses a serious challenge to Carnahan. A modern-day
David and Goliath story, his rise from unknown to contender is a testament to the power
of one man to make a difference.
Directed by Frank Popper, U.S.A, 2006, 35mm, 82
