"Like most of [Kiyoshi] Kurosawa's films, Bright Future casts its spell by drawing out the horror of everyday existence bit by bit, and then tossing in some otherworldly weirdness that makes the hair on the back of your neck try to run for cover" -New York Times
"Spellbinding...Maintains it's own squiddish logic...one of the most breathtaking film finales of the year" -Entertainment Weekly
"Truly chilling and extraordinary" -Chicago Tribune
Kiyoshi Kurasawa (Cure, Pulse) deviates from the horror genre that cemented him as one of Japan's top directors to produce a strange tale of urban alienation and disillusionment. Two men stuck in dreary factory jobs in Tokyo, the volatile Mamorou (Tadanobu Asano, Ichi the Killer) and more reserved Yuji (Joe Odagiri), decide to conduct an experiment that will allow a jellyfish to live in fresh water. When violence disrupts their lives, Yuji is left to continue the experiment with Mamorou's father. However, the bond the pair forms is weaker than Yuji's bond to the jellyfish, which has destructive results.
Directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Japan, 2003, 115 min. In Japanese with English subtitles.
