In a country where it is considered bad luck to be reincarnated in a female body (whether you're an insect or a human being), a small band of women is changing centuries-old perceptions of gender. The Kala Rongo Monastery is one of the few monasteries in Tibet reserved solely for Buddhist nuns. Established in 1990 by Lama Norlha Rinpoche and currently home to more than 300 souls, the monastery has become a unique educational center for Tibetan women, offering them opportunities never previously available. Traditionally a monastic life was a privilege reserved solely for men. The majority of the hard labor native to rural Tibet (herding, weaving, making yak butter and cheese) was the work of women and girls were encouraged to marry at an early age, so they could begin the dangerous task of birthing and raising children (Tibet still has one of the highest childbirth mortality rates in the world). Bari Pearlman's groundbreaking documentary provides an intimate glimpse into the daily life of the nuns at Kala Rongo -- far from being marked by solitude or deprivation, they are rich in community, laughter and quotidian beauty. They are being given a real opportunity to change the course of their lives, and to preserve the rich spiritual heritage of their people, even as they slowly reshape it.
Directed by Bari Pearlman, U.S.A., 2007, BetaSP, 68 mins. In Tibetan with English subtitles.
