"Well-acted...[Keiko] Matsuzaka's portrayal of fear, loathing, desperation and courage is understated brilliance." -Chicago Tribune
"This haunting film recalls Kurosawa in his epic mode" -Time Out Chicago
Set in 1838, the remote island of Hachijojima serves as a penal colony where criminal exiles are forced to endure a spartan existence, living in villages where they have to suffer intolerable weather, periodic famine, and other harsh forces. The only rule is that everyone is on their own to survive, and any prisoners who attempt to escape are punished by being rolled down steep rocky cliffs in large wicker balls. Toyogiku, a former courtesan from the Yoshiwara district in Edo, has been sent to the island for the crime of arson, and exploits the only currency available for her use: her own sexuality. This predatory economic situation reduces the dismal life on this island to its absolute essentials, that are replete with simmering, unreleased passions. On the verge of despair, she falls in love with a new arrival, the charismatic and stoic Kisaburo, a love which not only drives them to freedom, but also to a tragedy of epic proportions. Hatred, desire, love, life and death, the joy and the sorrow of being alive, Runin is a human drama that unfolds in the most unforgiving conditions on this solitary island in a distant sea. This film is the second work of Eiji Okuda whose first film Shoujyo: An Adolescent was internationally recognized and awarded the Grand Prix at the Paris Film Festival and at the AFI Film Festival. Runin is an epic period piece that harkens back to the era of great Japanese cinema.
Directed by Eiji Okuda, Japan, 2004, 35mm, 149 mins. In Japanese with English subtitles.
This film will be opening in Tokyo, Japan at the same time as its presentation at the Facets Cinematheque in Chicago!
