THE ROMANCE OF ASTREA AND CELADON (Les amours d'Astrée et de Céladon)
Golden Lion Venice Film Fest
"A quietly delightful film, that calmly puts its faith in poetry and idealism; it is performed with serene confidence and poise, and succeeds in being gently affecting, mysterious and often erotic" -Guardian UK
"Like Robert Bresson before him, Rohmer shows that not even the subtlest movement, expression or tonal inflection is lost to his gaze. Watching the film is like cinematic pearl diving, where pleasures can be gleaned as much from nuance, context and the poeticism of language as they can from character, intrigue and, here, song" -TimeOut London
"Throughout human history, Rohmer suggests, attractive young people and the occasional interested elder (in this case a druid priest) have discussed at length the nature of love, truth, and fidelity. The movie's gravity has the effect of raising Rohmer's career-long concerns to cosmic heights." -Village Voice
Critics' Pick! "Like Haydn, Rohmer has not succumbed to pessimism or despair in his late work, and here he is as light of touch and witty as ever" -New York Magazine
"Rohmer's final statement...wins with its glorious embrace of the ideal of perfect love" -NewCity Chicago
"Superb" -TimeOut Chicago
Critics Choice! "Tales like these can often come off as flutey, but this one is elevated by its high intellectual tone, the luxuriant landscapes, and Rohmer's spare, unadorned style" -Chicago Reader
Veteran French New Wave filmmaker Eric Rohmer calls The Romance of Astrea and Celadon his final film at age 87. Adapted from the literary classic L'Astrée by Honoré d'Urfé, the film is a tale about shepherds, nymphs and druids set in the fifth century. Love is the subject, but in typical Rohmer style it is a love full of paradoxes, contradictions and the absurdities of courtship. Celadon and Astrea are hopelessly in love, until Astrea casts off Celadon when misled by a jealous suitor. A nymph rescues the heartbroken man when he throws himself into a river, but Astrea still believes him to be dead. Disguising himself as a female druid, Celadon befriends his former sweetheart to win back her favor, in this graceful tale of l'amour fou.
Directed by Eric Rohmer, France, 2007, 35mm, 109 mins. In French with English subtitles.
