"Ravishingly lensed" -Variety
"A sort of celluloid equivalent of Eno-esque ambient music, Dutch director Nanouk Leopold's second feature is a modest slice of modernism that makes the most of its skeletal story." -Time Out NY
"Leopold's delicately artful imagery recalls Antonioni at his best." -New York Magazine
"By the time this compact exercise in minimalism reaches its conclusion, you'll find yourself moved in ways you never expected." -Nerve.com
"Intriguing...its wide-screen mise-en-scene shimmers, and its emotional payoff packs a quiet wallop" -Chicago Reader
Guernsey concentrates on Anna, a strong-willed wife, mother, and irrigation
engineer. She leads a comfortable life, but when a colleague commits suicide while they're
working abroad on an aid mission, Anna's life is thrown into disarray. Her decision to keep
the suicide a secret manifests itself in a skewed perception of those close to her, leading
her to wonder how well they actually know her. Eschewing heightened drama, the film unfolds
along with Anna's questioning of her family and friends. As she emotionally distances
herself from them, Anna becomes a voyeur to her own domestic drama. While confronting the
distance we maintain between ourselves and others, Writer-director Nanouk Leopold's second
feature maintains a visually magnificent standard, an achievement recognized in the
significant acclaim it received when screened during the Director's Fortnight at the Cannes
Directed by Nanouk Leopold, Belgium/The Netherlands, 2005, 35mm, 90 mins. In
Dutch and English with English subtitles.
