NEW 35MM PRINT!
"High-style, defiantly lewd... Stunningly shot and acted with alarmingly straight faces by a band of beauteous pseudo-nuns mostly wearing mascara and designer hairdos" -Chicago Tribune
"Director Norifumi Suzuki doesn't have a clue about Christianity, but his delirious visual style is reminiscent of 60s Italian horror in its rich colors and hysterical zooming" -Chicago Reader
Dario Argento meets the Marquis de Sade as sexploitation guru Norifumi Suzuki plunges us into a maelstrom of torture, secret masochistic desires and blasphemous rites. A young woman (Yumi Takigawa) enters a convent to investigate the mysterious death of her mother. She soon discovers a smorgasbord of vice as she's abused by lecherous archbishops, a lesbian mother superior and a line of fellow nuns ready to whip her (in the film's most deliriously over-the-top scene) with rose-thorns! An unholy mix of sex, comedy, drugs, flagellation, horror, and political commentary is amazingly fused in one of cinema's truly most outrageous works, that is very excessive, absolutely wild, as well as a demented subversive masterpiece.
Directed by Norifumi Suzuki, Japan, 1974, 35mm, 91 mins. In Japanese with English subtitles.
