MONGOLIAN PING PONG
"Much more so than any movie actually about spiritual discipline, the new Chinese film Mongolian Ping Pong could be a meditational object -- if, perhaps, it wasn't a sneaky comedy and, to boot, one of the most breathtaking cinematic records of landscape and sky ever filmed." -Village Voice
"There's no denying that much of its pleasure comes from watching the members of Bilike's family engaged in their quotidian rituals" -New York Times
"Movies don't come any more charming than Mongolian Ping Pong." -New York Post
"Wistful, humorous and majestically pictorial, Mongolian Ping Pong is an off-trail film full of offtbeat delights." -Chicago Tribune
When young Bilike finds an ordinary ping pong ball, he and his friends take to flights of imaginative whimsy and embark on a journey to find the source of the mysterious unknown object. Bilike's old grandmother says the ball is a glowing pearl sent by the gods, but the boys are skeptical after it fails the test. Since none of their other family members are able to offer any more insight, the three boys go to a remote monastery so that they can consult the wise lamas. But even the most knowledgeable inhabitants of the grasslands are bewildered. When a television show finally reveals that the object is the "national ball of China," the determined young scouts set off to return the ping-pong ball to the Chinese capital, where an even bigger adventure and more amusing trouble await them.
Directed by Ning Hao, China, 2004, 35mm, 102 mins. In Mongolian with English subtitles.
