"It's like an Agatha Christie in which lots of people have opportunity and motive. But Mermoud works so close to the characters, sees them in such detail, that only later do we pull back and observe the workings of the plot" -Roger Ebert
Recommended! "A cannily constructed thriller... Accomplices is a work by an already-accomplished narrative detective" -NewCity Chicago
Critics' Choice! "Intelligent and assured... The firmly controlled film is an exercise in contrast and balance: graphic but not prurient, polished but not slick, fixated by sexual danger yet devoid of puritanism" -Chicago Reader
Carefree Vincent (Cyril Descours) and Rebecca (Nina Meurisse), just turned 18, meet at a cybercafé, and it is love at first sight. Two months later, Vincent's body is fished out of a river and Rebecca cannot be found. What happened? Accomplices combines two stories, that of Rebecca and Vincent who plunge recklessly into the world of prostitution, and that of Inspector Cagan (Gilbert Melki) and his colleague Mangin (Emmanuelle Devos, Read My Lips) who are seeking to understand and reconstruct what happened. In the course of his investigation Cagan discovers that Vincent was a prostitute, finding clients via the Internet. Rebecca, far from wanting him to change, is attracted by the lure of finanicial gain and wants to push him further in that direction. Wanting to share his experiences, she decides to accompany him to his clients. Questioning Vincent's clients and Rebecca's mother, who is distraught at her daughter's disappearance, the inspector gets ever more deeply mired in a situation where corpses are piling up, and he is forced to get more involved in order to resolve this disturbing case. The story of these doomed lovers resonates with him personally, which underscores his own uncertainties, pushing him to make a crucial choice that will change his life.
Known to audiences for his short films, this is Swiss filmmaker Frédéric Mermoud's feature debut, which he also co-scripted. He displays his considerable talent by interweaving different timeframes to recount the investigation of an inspector pursuing his job with such zeal that he loses himself in it, thereby giving us a police drama that is both a detective as well as a love story.
Directed by Frédéric Mermoud, France, 2009, 93 mins. In French with English subtitles.
