"I'm interested in the unfolding fantasies that stem from reality... Love is
not an illusion but a utopia, the greatest one ever. It keeps us alive as
long as we believe in it." -Götz
The film's title refers to the brightest star in Scorpio - the astrological sign associated, for better or worse, with sexual passion and force. Set in a sprawling Vienna apartment complex, Antares is a dark and intense drama that examines the love lives of three women from the same housing project on the outskirts of a big city. Eva (Petra Morzé) is the happily married nurse (engaging in a passionate affair with a man she barely knows); Sonja (Susanne Wuest) is a grocery checkout girl (afraid that her immigrant husband Marco is cheating on her--and he is); and Nicole (Martina Zinner) is the single mother (trying to move on, unsuccessfully, from her brutish ex-husband). Each woman, seeking affection in her own manner, becomes embroiled in a heady combination of sex, jealousy, deception and violence. Love, Antares tells us, may be the same thing for every person, but this most powerful of emotions comes in infinite variations.
Directed by Götz Spielmann, Austria, 2004, DVD, 105 mins. In German with English subtitles.
