Chicago Premiere Martin Scorsese presents!
"An unusually pure example of American kitchen-sink realism. With an astutely chosen ensemble led by Danny Aiello and Jane Curtin, it has integrity up to its eyeballs." -New York Times
"The kind of smart, realistic indie family drama the movies should give us more often" -Chicago Tribune
"Spontaneous, confident realism...[the film has] a strong feeling for family, and a way of allowing the action to grow out of the characters instead of being required by the script." -Roger Ebert
Tip of the Week! "Regional authenticity with a waterfront tang" -New City Chicago
For more than 60 years, the best seafood shop in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, belonged to the Giorgio family. Now, the business faces grave financial danger but patriarch Frank, a bull-headed traditionalist forcefully played by Danny Aiello, refuses to concede that other measures may need to be taken. Brooklyn Lobster is director Kevin Jordan's affectionate homage to a place and a tight-knit community coming face-to-face with change. With the threat of foreclosure and a public auction looming, Frank insists his last-ditch effort will save the day. His wife Maureen (convincingly played by Jane Curtin) is ready to let the business-and Frank-go. Their son Michael (Daniel Sauli), living in the high-tech world of Seattle and home for the Christmas holidays, is reluctantly dragged into the unfolding crisis. Based on Jordan's actual family business (Jordan's Lobster Dock in Brooklyn), and buoyed by beautifully understated supporting performances, Jordan (whose Smiling Fish and Goat on Fire won the Discovery Award at the Toronto International Film Festival) shows genuine affection for every member in this wacky family portrait.
Directed by Kevin Jordan, U.S.A., 2005, 35mm, 90 mins.
