In the privacy of his own Buenos Aires apartment, Ramones fan and aspiring screenwriter Luciano (Daniel Hendler) occupies a contemplative internal world where he can dance with frenzied abandon and endlessly rework his unfinished screenplay without interference. But the world outside is a neurotic minefield of belligerent doormen, sexually transmitted diseases, and painfully awkward misunderstandings. Luciano makes a living working children's parties playing Cachito, a purple furry monster on a popular Argentine children's show -- a profession which is thrown into stark contrast when his old friend Manuel returns from Spain, fresh from the success of his new television show, "The Paranoids." But as Luciano learns more about this television show, he begins to suspect that details of his own paranoid life are being turned into popcorn fodder for audiences abroad. In the midst of all this, Manuel takes a business trip, leaving his girlfriend Sofia sleeping on Luciano's couch. At first, the visit brings Luciano's worst nightmare to life: scrutiny from an outsider. However, Sofia begins to find interesting things about Luciano's lifestyle and thoughts, and in turn, he starts to follow her into the outside world -- namely, Buenos Aires, which is artfully and affectionately crafted into a lively cinematic playground by director Gabriel Medina. Along the way, sequences of dark comedy and surprisingly resonant romance pop off the screen, in this understated Latin American slacker comedy.
Directed by Gabriel Medina, Argentina, 2008, 35mm, 101 mins. In Spanish with English subtitles.
