"[Director Francisco Laresgoti] has an eye for colorful, geometric settings, some taken from actual Mexico City locations, giving a distinctly South-of-the-Border feel to his future shock" -TimeOut Chicago
It is the year 2033 in Mexico City, now called Villaparaiso (Paradise City), and after a bloody revolution the military regime restored civil order. However, religion and freedom of expression are now outlawed, as corporations control society to ensure their prosperity. The populace is controlled by the use of a sedative which is being delivered to them in their food. The rich/poor divide is starker than ever, as state-controlled media puts a spin on everything for the benefit of the government.
Pablo, the protégé of the leader, is a young member of the elite class who is being groomed into military power. He plays life on the edge, believes the state propaganda, and lives for the decadence of it by enjoying designer drugs and hunting poor people. A charismatic "hidden" priest, known as Father Miguel, tells him that his real father - the leader of the revolutionary movement - is still alive, but enslaved by the government. Pablo joins the rebellion to rescue him and bring down the industrial-military regime.
2033 is a dystopic science fiction adventure film which proves that society can only find the right answers by asking the right questions.
Directed by Francisco Laresgoti, Mexico, 2009, 100 mins. In Spanish with English subtitles.
