This exuberant and deeply moving film follows a new couple, Romeo (Jérémie Elkaïm) and Juliette (Valérie Donzelli), who meet at a party, fall in love, move in together, and have a child, Adam. As they wearily navigate the travails of early parenthood, suspicions emerge that Adam has a medical problem, a fear that's confirmed when doctors discover a brain tumor. Gathering family and friends, they declare war on his illness, and their storybook romance plunges into an unrelenting world of hospitals, exhaustion, and uncertainty.
More heart than heartbreak, Valérie Donzelli's second feature transforms the "disease drama" into an original experience, infusing the story with unexpected verve. Their authentic performances create a film about a contemporary couple who surprise even themselves with their ability to fight not only for the life of their child but for each other. Drawing on the real life experiences of Donzelli and co-star/co-writer Elkaïm and what they went through when their own son fell ill, Declaration of War will bring tears to your eyes and dazzle you with its contagious vitality.
Directed by Valérie Donzelli, France, 2011, 35mm, 110 mins. In French with English subtitles.
