This moving drama begins in 1975 when Bulgaria was ruled by an oppressive political regime that encouraged distrust among its people. Authorities ask a man to file intelligence reports on his own father-in-law, who was known for openly disrespecting Bulgaria's leadership. Fearing for his life, the son-in-law flees to Germany with his wife and young son after a long stay in a refugee camp.
When the son (Alex), now in his early thirties, becomes the only survivor of a car accident, he loses any memory of his past. Hoping to lift his grandson's spirits and refresh his mind, the grandfather Bai Dan (Miki Manojlovic, Underground), travels to visit him in the hospital in Germany. When he sees that the pills prescribed for Alex are not working, he decides to follow his own course of therapy, by organizing a spiritual journey for his grandson back into his past. In changing places, time and transport, crossing half Europe on a tandem bicycle, they play backgammon, the simplest, and yet the most complex of all games. As they ride through the Balkan countryside, Alex begins to find himself, realizing that destiny is the dice we hold in our own hands and life is a game on the edge between chance and skill.
Directed by Stephan Komandarev, Bulgaria/Germany/Slovenia/Hungary, 2008, 35mm, 105 mins. In Bulgarian, German, Italian, Slovenian, English and Hungarian with English subtitles.
