"Directed by Shosuke Murakami with touching tenderness...the movie is unusually perceptive about the attractions of online communities while gently insisting on the superiority of flesh over fantasy." -New York Times
"Sweet, weird, and likable...a paean to the joy of busting out and taking a chance" -Village Voice
"The fairy-tale romance is grounded in authentic detail." -TV Guide
"The simple plot allows for considerable visual invention...The playful tone segues to an emotionally resonant finish, which unfolds against a candy-colored Tokyo even Parisians might envy." -Chicago Reader
For Otaku (the Japanese term for "geek"), a twenty-two year old computer engineer whose online
persona is Densha Otoko (Train Man), life in a fantasy world is less complicated and more
interesting than life in reality. More comfortable interacting with fictional characters than with
real people, Otaku has little reason to reach out to reality - that is, until he meets a pretty
young woman on a commuter train and saves her from a lecherous molester. After this fateful
encounter, Otaku falls in love and sets out on a mission to get his dream girl, with guidance and
encouragement from his online community. Complete with awkward conversations, makeovers and nerd
passion, Train Man re-imagines the familiar teen romantic comedy about the loser and the
prom queen, substituting the diverse American high school with the equally multicultural world of
Tokyo. Based on a popular Bulletin Board website in Japan called "2ch," this improbable yet
enchanting story became a media sensation, that was made into a best-selling novel, a manga series
and also a television drama. Train Man reminds us that no one is more charming than the underdog.
Despite our obsession with computers, screen names, cell phones and gadgets, it is a testament
that the desire to find true love and make human contact is still at the core of our existence.
