Facets Film Dialogue with filmmaker Richard Ledes
FRED WON'T MOVE OUT
"Sensitively written and directed" -Village Voice
"Carefully observed" -New York Post
"Finely calculated, understated... beautifully judged in pace and tone" -Financial Times
Legendary actor Elliott Gould gives a poignant and understated performance as the eponymous Fred, an elderly man who stubbornly refuses to leave the country house he has called home for 50 years. Increasingly frustrated with how Alzheimer's disease has afflicted his wife, Fred resists his exasperated children's attempts to move him into a nursing home, since they are skeptical about his ability to live independently. It is difficult to watch Fred's struggle with his wife's condition as he also attempts to battle his own ailing health.
Memorably acted by a pitch perfect Gould and supported by a stellar ensemble cast, writer-director Richard Ledes (The Caller) has made a semi-autobiographical feature which illuminates the turmoil of aging with compassion and deadpan humor. This film was actually shot over a three week period in the same house where the director's parents had lived.
Fred Won't Move Out is a very moving story which is not only told with generosity and emotional bravery, it is also about the nature of transitions in life, geographical, psychological, and spiritual.
