Facets Seminar Series:
Virginia Wright Wexman presents:
CHINATOWN
A much-honored film that has by now assumed the status of a classic,
Chinatown bears the traces of many hands, including those of director Roman Polanski, screenwriter Robert Towne, producer Robert Evans, and star Jack Nicholson. The long and difficult process of collaboration that resulted in the film which was ultimately released represents a challenge to auteurist assumptions about the singular nature of artistic "genius." We will examine the melding of sensibilities and clashes of egos that marked the making of Chinatown in order to shed light on the interpersonal sources of its power. And we will pose the question of whether this film should be thought of as an exception to the auteurist principle of the lone creator or as a model for an alternate explanation of artistic production.
