Few filmmakers have so indelibly changed the face of cinema as Jean-Luc Godard. Few filmmakers have been so elusive, defying characterization at every turn. Godard's films from Breathless to Weekend, Wind from the East to Passion go far beyond his role as a founder of the French New Wave to a highly controversial, complex and enigmatic artist. New Yorker film critic Richard Brody's new book, Everything is Cinema: The Working Life of Jean-Luc Godard reads like a thriller as it probes and analyzes the sources of Godard's work, his sometimes difficult relationships with co-workers and women, his feud with Francois Truffaut, and his place in world cinema.
