SLEEPING AND WAKING
"Smart and articulate, and director Joe Banno avoids any pat resolution to the protagonist's existential quandary" -Chicago Reader
Sullivan Daniels (Jeff Allin), his body ravaged by a terminal disease, consents to endure an experimental surgical procedure that will save his physical life, but leaves him in a spiritual quandary: Who am I now -- who is the new Sullivan? He is an artist and a college teacher of art history who no longer trusts his new hands and not only has renounced painting, but his once successful marriage is quietly on the rocks. He keeps his wife at arms length and questions everything around him with a skeptical perspective, as if he needs to reboot his life, but does not quite know what to do. What would you sacrifice to have a second chance at life? Most of us would take that chance to be here longer with the ones we loved, but what if your choice stripped you of your soul? What if in the process you lost yourself? What would happen to the relationships that were most important to you? Complicating his dilemma is an attractive graduate student who is drawn to Sullivan's paintings, but is unaware of his inner conflicts and growing embitterment. His English teacher best friend is a devout Catholic who urges him to attend Sunday services with him, but Sullivan continues to be torn between his life before his physical trauma and the suspenseful uncertainty of embarking on a new path. Sullivan has to confront the emotional, spiritual and physical consequences of his life-saving decision in this remarkable romantic drama that explores questions of identity, relationships, and faith.
