In partnership with Chicago Opera Theatre, Facets presents a screening and discussion of Luis Puenzo's Argentine drama The Official Story. With an award-winning score by Phillip Glass, the film will be followed by a reception, including live music provided by Chicago Opera Theatre. The screening will take place at Facets Multi-Media.
Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Film in 1985, The Official Story tells the tale of Alicia, a wealthy Argentine high school teacher, whose life centers around her adopted daughter Gaby. Alicia's quest to discover more about Gaby's biological parents and the details of her adoption reveal hard-hitting truths about the political turmoil during Argentina's "Dirty War" of the 1970s.
The screening will take place at Facets Multi-Media on Sunday, April 7 at 12:00pm. Chicago Opera Theater's general director Andreas Mitisek will begin with an introduction to his concept of the second opera in COT's 2013 season, Maria de Buenos Aires. Following the film there will be live music, including excerpts from Maria.
"These are the heartbreaking dilemmas of The Official Story, a film that deals with the turmoil in Argentina through the story of a single family...as love and honor try to find a way to exist in the face of official cruelty." Roger Ebert
