The Cursed Bird ensemble rips into:
A Page of Madness
Directed by Teinosuke Kinugasa, 1926
"A synopsis of the plot can't begin to explain the power of the film, nor the audacity of its vision" -Midnight Eye
"[A] mind-boggling silent masterpiece... the rhythmic pulsation of graphic, semiabstract depictions of madness makes the film both startling and mesmerizing" -Chicago Reader
Facets Night School is proud to present the 1926 Japanese silent film, A Page of Madness, with musical accompaniment by Cursed Bird (featuring current and former members of Del Rey, Head of Femur and more).
"This virtuoso Japanese silent film, made in 1926, was re-released in 1973. It uses no title-boards, so the story is uninterrupted — an unusual technique in the silent era. Indeed, except for the absence of dialogue, reviewers agree that this classic movie has a very modern look and "feel." The Seaman (Masao Inoue) works as a volunteer at the mental institution where his wife (Yoshie Nakagawa) is locked up. She was placed there after she had some sort of fit and tried to drown their infant son. The story of their family life, and of this incident, is told in flashbacks. He hopes that by working at the institute, he will have some opportunity to reawaken her to the present and take her away." —All Movie Guide
The Cursed Bird ensemble will draw on a vocabulary of noise, psychedelia, free improvisation, proto-metal, and acid rock to score the film's onslaught of surrealistic imagery and psychological fragility.
