Facets’ Young Chicago Critics is the only film camp where kids ages 7 to 14 learn what it takes to produce, perform and critique films just like the pros. The eight-day camp offers each child detailed instruction in the craft of writing film reviews, and provides kids with hours of hands-on experience in film production. Dynamic interaction is the cornerstone of the Critics sessions where kids take an active role.

Whether your child has a little or a lot of experience in filmmaking, YCC will give them the skills and confidence to produce a well-told story with moving images. YCC also helps kids make the connection between thinking critically about movies and creating them. There is no better place in Chicago for kids to make friends with kids who love movies as much as they do!

The opportunities don’t stop there! Graduates of the Young Chicago Critics program can become official Children’s Jury members for the 25th annual Chicago International Children’s Film Festival in August.

Cost: $325 per child. The fee includes all camp supplies and equipment, plus a snack. We offer a 10% discount for currently enrolled Facets Future Filmmakers as well as siblings of campers enrolled. Full and partial scholarships are offered on a limited basis and are based on financial need.

Young Chicago Critics application details:

  1. The deadline for submitting the Young Chicago Critics Brochure Application and Fee ($325) is APRIL 21, 2008. Space in the program is limited and applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.*

  2. After we receive your Application, the CICFF will request more information in an ENROLLMENT FORM. The deadline for completing the ENROLLMENT FORM is April 28, 2008. Applicants are officially accepted to the program after all paperwork is received (below).

    • Enrollment Form (Parent & Child sections)
    • Teacher Recommendation - Required for children who have not attended YCC in the past. Recommendations should detail your child's general behavior and enthusiasm for learning about film.
    • Scholarship Form - A limited number of scholarships are available based on financial need.

      • Scholarships will only be granted for participation in Session 1
      • In the case that a scholarship is not awarded we will place your child on a wait list for additional scholarships.


  3. Confirmation of acceptance to YCC will be sent by May 2, 2008 or after all paperwork is received.

  4. Children who have not previously participated in Young Chicago Critics must attend an orientation session. Orientation sessions will be offered Thursday, May 29 and Saturday, May 31. The orientation includes:

    • a brief introduction on what it means to be a critic
    • a screening of short films
    • verbal discussion of the films
    • written critique/evaluation of the films


  5. Refunds & Payment Processing

    • Refunds will be given if your child's participation is cancelled before May 1, 2008.

    • Wait List: Credit card information and/or a check must be submitted for your child to be on a wait list. Your payment will not be processed until your child is accepted into the program. We will contact you prior to registration.

  4. TEACHER RECOMMENDATION – new participants of YCC (due April 28, 2008)
  5. SCHOLARSHIP FORM (if applicable) - due April 28, 2008
* Please Note: Unless all materials are received by April 28, your child will be placed on a waiting list.
